For what purpose?
If intended to be camera mounted, check the Rode

Better to put the shotgun on a hand held boom and keep it within 2m to talent.

I'm looking at ebay at the moment and can get a sony shotgun mic for about £20, shipped from US, which is excellent. But i have no idea how to use it. Would i plug straight into camera, or convert it to stereo first then plug it in, or if i want to listen to it what would i do? i only have 1 audio input.

First it won't be as good as the Rode.
Sony and Canon make special shotgun mics that connect through their separate proprietary hot shoe connectors. Some of these even change the directional audio pattern as you zoom the lens. You need to match the mic to the camcorder model. Other mics connect through the HiZ mini plug. Pro Mics are usually LowZ (with XLR connectors) and need a transformer adapter or converting mixer to work with consumer camcorders.
I suggest you get the Rode. I have the Sony and Canon hot shoe mics and neither match the Rode.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
