  1. Hi all.

    I have an h264 file that I have edited on in Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 10. I have created a 1280 x 720 23.97fps video file (video was shot in 24p at 1280 x 720) in the m2v format. I have aiff audio separate from the video file.

    When I put the video file into DVD Architect 5 to burn to blu ray, I'm told that the file file needs to be recompressed. I know the aiff will be recompressed, and I'm ok with audio compression.

    I edited off of the master h264 file and compressed into m2v, but I really don't want a second recompression.

    So...

    Exactly what format must I output my edited video file to so that I can avoid recompression?

    I know if I output the file in mpg2 720 x 480, when I put the file in architect, there is no recompression necessary when burning to DVD.

  2. uncompressed , and allow dvda to re-encode it. At least this way you avoid an extra stage generation loss

    sony vegas (all versions incl. pro) , don't export h.264 according to blu-ray compatible specifications

    or use a 3rd party encoder that encodes to blu-ray specs e.g. you could use x264 to output raw avc. You might use debugmode frameserver (with some gui for x264 if you're not comfortable with commandline) to export rawavc. DVDA doesn't support mbaff authoring (which x264 uses for it's "interlaced" encoding), but that doesn't matter in this specific case, because you are using 1280x720p23.976

  3. Thanks for your response. Two questions:

    1.) I have an AC3 audio file of the video. Architect 5 tells me it will need to compress THAT file. When I used the same file for DVD authorizing, it accepted it as-is. Please advise. I do have an aiff of the same audio file, so if compression is necessary, I can use that one instead.

    2.) I get "An error occured" message when I try to go uncompressed. It doesn't tell me any more than that.

    I did use the same settings, 1280 x 720p 23.976 fps and try to save the video as an m2ts file (I assume that it won't recompress that file), but when it was created, the video took up from the upper left corner, to about 2/3 of the video screen, with a green line at the bottom.

    Any ideas what's going on?

    BTW I'm not sure I can use the other software you were talking about, as I'm taking the 22 minute h264 I have and editing it down to one minute.

  4. Are you using the pro version of DVDA ? There might be some differences between the studio version

    AC3 should be compatible (pass through) , even for DVD, let alone blu-ray. Something is either wrong with your file, or software. Is it 48Khz ?

    I think the option for uncompressed AVI should be under "AVI" , you might not have that option in the studio version

    Alternatively, you could use HD MPEG2 compression for blu-ray, this should allow pass through in authoring. The bundled sony's AVC (or mainconcept AVC) implementation isn't that great anyways

    You're referring to "Smart rendering". If the input file was AVCHD from a camcorder (not some other flavor of h.264), and the settings matched, then it might work. It's very wonky in vegas. Usually doesn't work. It usually re-encodes. If it says "smart rendering no recompression required" when exporting, you know it's working. 1280x720p23.976 isn't a standard AVCHD camcorder format, so I doubt it will work for you
