  1. Hi
I have a home video on DVD. Sometime ago I created an MPG video from it called "Ant MPEG1 MP2 MPEG_PS No edits.mpg". This plays perfectly in Windows Media Player.

I proceeded to edit this mpg using Avidemux, so producing "Ant Cuts.mpg". This plays perfectly in Windows Media Player.

I've recently tried to edit Ant Cuts.mpg (I wanted to create a video of just the first half of the original mpg.) called "SBase MPEG-PS(A+V).mpg" won't play (It just flashes up the message "Error downloading codec")

I tried again with different Avidemux settings to produce "SBase MPGVideo.mpg" It won't play either --- It displays "Operation failed due to a certification error"

I suspect I am not using the correct settings in Avidemux. Try as I may, I can't seem to reproduce my original settings! Can someone please tell me the correct Avidemux settings to use.

    (Full details of videos below.)

    Thanks in advance

PS I have read the Thread: How to get started with avidemux, edit and convert any video format

The last two are using VBR in video data ... use CBR .

The two non-working clips also have very short play length times for the file size being created .

  3. Thanks.

But what is CBR and where do I change it?

  6. You appear to be re-encoding. If you just want to cut the video without changing it's encoding parameters, I would recommend a simple cutter like Mpeg2Cut2. No changes to the format of audio or Video.

The clip with the codec problem has the audio changed to PCM. I also see the aspect ratio changed in one of the clips. Also Progressive changes to Interlaced. IMO you are using the wrong tool for the job. Check that, you are DEFINITELY using the wrong tool.

Re-encoding loses quality with each use. Nothing at all wrong with VBR, for video.
