I'm in the market for a HD camcorder near term.

Canon's prosumer base/source format more or less until recently has been .m2t until the anouncement of the XF family and other manufacturers offer ACVHD.

Curious how the two face-off against one another head to toe in terms of quality, computing power required to process those formats and any other relevant category that will help me narrow down my choices.

What are the pro and cons of both?

Bottom line, which consistently yields a better picture that's sharp + accurate after going through the post production process or even straight out of the box for that matter?

    What's compromised or sacrificed possibily?

Please help steer me towards things I should be thinking about!

One problem is that few choices are reasonable+ affordable in the 20X lens arena.

Many of the pros and cons HDV vs. AVCHD are listed in this thread and others I wrote
    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/327954-Camcorder-buy-1080i-or-1080p-Final-Cut-Expre...ly-does-1080i?

If you are willing to spend $2795, the JVC GY-HD100U is the best deal IMO. Above that I like the XDCAM PMW EX1 or EX3.

A 20x lens is going to be hard to find at any reasonable price. Why do you need a 20x zoom?

    edDV:

Thank you for pointing out several helpful threads which I’ll digest over the weekend.

My budget is roughly 3.5k and then there’s accessories to factor in. Apparently AVCHD (from what I’ve read online) takes considerable computing power. So, if that is true, I’d may well have to upgrade my computer and software in order to properly handle this format. My wife would not appreciate or approve of me spending 5k +!!

    What camcorder(s) do you own/use?

I’m eying the Canon A1S, the successor of the A1 that I’ve been borrowing on weekends since last July.

    Pros:

    a) 20x lens
    b) Excellent, reliable product at its price-point and generally well-regarded.
    c) Option of adding a solid state recorder although at an additional cost.
    d) I like being able to record to 2 formats simultaneously (tape and SSR)
    e) I would already have a flying start with it considering I’ve used the A1.

    Cons:
    a) Not full HD just HDV.
    b) Doesn’t incorporate solid state recording.
    c) Been out on the market for approx 2 years. Aging technology. Product life is declining.

I need the 20x lens because I’m positioned/stationed so far away from the action in a large church.

The just about to be released Canon XF-100/105 series and the newly announced XA10 compact (AVCHD) only sport a 10x which puts those out of the running.

    The XF-300 & 305 have an 18x but cost 6.5k and up.

Question: What is the quality difference visually between full HD as directly compared to HDV? Slight, very noticeable or somewhere inbetween?

To all: Any guidance, observations, information or suggestions are welcomed.
