I am looking into getting a SSD drive from my older Dell pc....And using it for a boot drive and to run my programs faster. It has a sata hard drive right now. Do I have to check and see if my CPU or motherboard can use a SSD? What about ram?
Thanks

I've heard of some older versions of Windows needing specific drivers to be installed to get SSDs to work, but I haven't heard of any CPU/motherboard restrictions. RAM shouldn't even be a factor. However, note that there is SATA 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 and SSDs are either 2.0 or 3.0. If your PC is old enough that it only supports 1.0, I think that is going to be a problem.

It is also best to use an O/S that supports "TRIM" and an SSD that has the TRIM function. Otherwise you have to manually use tools to wipe out the previously used areas on the disk or you will lose capacity over time. Windows 7 is the only Windows o/s to fully support SSD drives with TRIM.
