Some DVD and BluRay players can NEVER be made region free.

Sony and Samsung make the most difficult to unlock players at this time. If you can't find a code for your player, it may be because there isn't one. If you lived in North America I'd tell you that as far as I know Sony doesn't make even one player right now for sale there that can be unlocked, but since you live in the UK your chance of unlocking this is maybe 5% instead of 0%.

Are these American DVDs commercially-produced movies, or home recorded discs? If it is the latter, homemade DVD R discs are region free already. If they are commercial releases, you have the option of making DVD backup copies that are region free, if you have a DVD burner on your computer. A software tool like DVDFab can accomplish that.

So, you have alternatives to trying to hack your player.

You cannot unlock a Sony DVP-NS39 with the standard remote. You MIGHT be able to do it with a Sony factory service remote, or a One For All programmable remote, or a laptop with an IRDA port to enter specific codes. Or you could buy a purpose built remote from a specialist shop to do the job (about £20)
