One of my old tapes gunked up my Panasonic AG-1980 heads so I opened it up to do some cleaning. While in there I noticed that there is a cylindrical pad about the diameter of a small marble made of felt or foam rubber, and since it's close to the head viewport and is activated by some sort of lever system, it appears it cleans the heads. I decided to pull it out because it had a small but heavy coating of oxide skid marks all the way around and I worried it would foul up whatever cleaning I'd just done. Does anyone know if this is a good idea? I would put a new one in but I have no idea where to get a part like this.
