try identifying the type of video it is with mediainfo and/or gspot. 1600x1200 is a non standard size. mpeg could be mpeg1 mpeg2 mpeg4? do you know how the source material was created?

I have seen this happen, particularly with xvid avi files. If this is the case you can use fourcc to change the video codec to divx.

gspot seems to have identified your problem. upper right - "codec not installed". looks like you need an mpeg-1 video codec installed on your computer.

strange one to not have, as i thought all windows came with it installed.

you might try changing the extension of the video file to .mpg instead of .avi and see if that helps vegas read it.

Mpeg1 is VCD codec. The frame size is weird. And the bitrate is way too high for SD. I'd say this is some kind of 3rd world country format.

    Definitely home brew.

  8. where did you get the clip ? didn't the capture come with software or codec to install?

if you install ffdshow, you can try enabling "mpeg in avi" in the ffdshow vfw configuration (yellow icon) . Set it to libavcodec instead of disabled

if that doesn't work, you can try re-wrapping it with ffmpeg into mpeg2 program stream (.mpg)

codecs normally come as an inf installer(right click on it and choose install), if not the /system32 folder is as good a place to try as any.

are you capturing game play? if so select a different format to save to. mpeg-2 would be better or even mpeg-4 if the bitrate is high enough.

the mpeg-1 codec is listed in ffdshow if you want to try that. you might have to enable it in the configuration/codecs tab, and also the mpeg-1 in avi setting.

  16. update... It only worked the audio part....

the visual part is not working yet

  17. that's the encoder , use the decoder tab

  18. still doesn't work ?

can you open it in vdub now? if so, you can save it as uncompressed avi (huge filesize) and it will work in vegas

can you make a small ~ 50mb sample and upload it to a filesharing site so it can be checked by others to see how to get it into vegas?

    Of Course

  21. how modern is your computer? it would be better to capture in something lossless if you care about quality e.g. huffyuv, ut video codec

if it's not fast enough computer, you can try xvid or divx, and vegas will open xvid/avi video

install xvid and I think vegas should open that 2nd video
    https://www.videohelp.com/tools/XviD_Codec

fraps is another capture option that vegas will import that many people use for game captures, but it's not free

that mpeg1 in avi that you are using is very low quality. horrendous. I would try to use something more modern/better

And yes I do care for quality...

xvid is already installed.... 64 bit os might be the issue?

    yes it could be

you need everything in the chain to be all 32bit or all 64bit

eg. if you run 64bit vegas, everything, including decoder has to be 64bit . As soon as 1 filter is 32-bit the chain breaks . Similarly if you run 32bit vegas even on 64-bit os, you need 32-bit filters

if you want to try a lossless format, try huffyuv or ut video codec. Both have 32bit/64-bit versions

  24. which once yields better quality?

both the same. Lossless means No quality loss from compression. The decoded image will be bit for bit identical to the original if you use the same colorspace (probably RGB if this is a video game)

The analogy in the audio world would be flac which is lossless, vs, mp3 which is lossy. flac can undergo infinite generations and suffer no quality loss, but mp3 will lose quality each generation

Also, how I go about the codecs? do I record then covert?
    Quote Quote
  27. I don't understand what you are asking?

I was suggesting to use a lossless format to record (so you don't already incur quality loss even before you edit)

Your export format will depend on whatever your goal is

  28. The game will not give me the option to record using that codec, so what do I do to?

    external software ex. fraps, camstasia?

Sorry it's my first time ever messing with codecs, editing and all...

still very grateful for your on going support
