converting vob to avi or h 264 changes video proportions

i'm trying to convert a vob file which is 720 x 576 at 25 fps to .mov or .avi for editing at the same size as the original. however when i convert in ffmpegx the proportions become almost square instead of 16 x 9 and the resolution goes from 1.3 GB to under 300 MB.

How can I keep the same proportion and quality of the original?

Try instead mpeg streamclip.
