i have sony hdr-xr500e handycam. i am facing a problem, when i play the video on cam it shows me the timecode and datecode on the video (time and date the video was recorded) but when i copy the video to pc it doesnt show me, is there any way by which i can get that timecode and datecode to my video on pc?

Timecode is recorded separately from video.

If this is important record the HDMI or analog output.

its because i want to save all the videos of my child and any occasion with date and time code so that it will be remembered when it is recorded

Now I see what you are asking. I thought you wanted date and time keyed into the video.

The original date and time is buried in the original AVCHD (h.264) SEI message* and can be extracted as follows assuming the camcorder actually saved the data. They have even provisioned for camera settings and GPS data.

This will only be present in the original m2ts (mts) stream so it is important you save the original mts files as your archive. Any conversion to a digital intermediate or recode following editing probably discards the data. It would be possible for editing software to keep track of original camcorder data by frame but I doubt many do.

Someday a programmer will write a utility to extract this data in a user friendly way like they have for digital camera still images.

brother thanks for the links..but i really dont understand how to put that date and time on the video because i have to edit them on Sony Vegas...i know these files are in folders but how to put them in video?

So you do want date and time keyed into video?

yes eddv but not in DV video...i have the solution for it...now using HD handycam and need the solution for AVCHD video

You will need to read the metadata, then title key the data with Vegas.

Or write a program to do it.

Don't destroy the original mts file (m2ts wrapper+h.264 stream) or you destroy the data.

There is a very good program you can use to burn in metadata on your files. DVMP Pro5 is the program I use. You can select date and time and place it in the picture.
I usually use a HDV videocamera but you can also use AVCHD.
I was referred to this page as I had a question about metadata from a Panasonic stillcamera with AVCHD. Panasonic says that they donot save metadata on stillcameras.
My question is then how date and time can be shown in the camera and in the file on the pc?
