Hi, I have an avi video file where the audio stream has an odd reverb effect to it. I'll attach a sample so you can hear what I mean. The recording is from an old VHS tape, so possibly the audio problem is from the transfer or the tape itself.

One other thing I should note about this file is when it was put on my hdd, the avi chunk viewer popped up initially (installed probably with XP Codec Pack), though with no error message.

Any suggestions how and if it's possible to remove the reverb from the audio stream?

    Cheers

Try running the audio through the freeware audio editor Audacity. You might be able to make some improvements.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

I'm a long-time lurker and often come by the site looking for a/v information.

Hmm... from the Audacity forums and DV forums it appears that reverb is not possible to remove, only reduce the effects of it.

    Thanks anyway.

That would have been my guess also, but you may get some improvement.

  6. And you're absolutely sure it's NOT supposed to sound like that?

It seems totally appropriate for this snippet as far as the voice reverb; i.e., "Star Wars-y" theme.

  7. It sounds to me like a mono source run through a phase shifter. I would play around with splitting the tracks, inverting one (maybe reducing the amplitude too), phase shifting it (you'll have to experiment to find the right amount), then adding the two together -- basically, un-phase shifting it.

Yes, pretty sure. The same doco with better sound can be found on YouTube -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj9C_rJD8fE -- and it's better quality.

Thanks for the suggestions, too, jagabo.
