    Hi again,
I've looked high and low for a tool that'll convert my MP4 to an AVI, while retaining the 6-channel audio. Since I keep running into dead-ends in that regard, I thought I'd try to simply extract the MP4's audio. Unfortunately the tools that claim to rip MP4 audio all seem to convert to Stereo at the most. I know that this file contains 6 channels, so it's not as if the problem is that there are only 2 channels in the MP4, forcing these converters to only support Stereo.
If anyone knows of how to rip the 6 channels from this MP4, please let me know. Better yet, if you know how to convert the MP4 to an AVI, while keeping the 5.1 in tact, even better.
    Thanks again,
    Justin

  2. you can extract the identical audio track with yamb

you can convert to avi with avidemux (you can copy the audio, if it's a format supported in avi container) , or re-encode to 5.1 AC3

    Hi,
Okay, YAMB successfully extracted to a 6-channel AAC, so that step is done. Now, did you mean that Avidemux can take that AAC and re-encode it to an AC-3? I have a feeling that's probably not what you meant, as Avidemux said it couldn't open the file. At this point, I'd just like to have the AAC converted to AC-3. I'm sorry if I'm missing something. I appreciate your help.
    Thanks again,
    Justin

  4. What are you trying to do?

What format is your input file (use mediainfo)?

What format do you want your output file to be (for video, audio & container)

avidemux can convert your mp4 to xvid/6-ch ac3/avi in 1 step (you mentioned it would be "even better" )

if you want ONLY the audio, use an audio program like audacity , eac3to or foobar2000 on the demuxed aac (you can even skip the yamb step and save the converted AC3 audio directly from avidemux from the mp4 file)

I'm trying to do what you wrote in your 4th line.
Using MediaInfo, the input file is "Format: MPEG-4".
I want the output file to be an AVI, with the original 6-channel audio in an AC-3.

mpeg-4 can mean about 20 different things

AVI is just a container and can hold more than 20 different things

You need to be more specific. Better yet, use mediainfo view=>text copy & paste the information back here

When you say "AVI" you need to list what type of compression e.g. xvid, mjpeg, lagarith etc....

  7. The current builds of avidemux seem to have problems with 6-ch aac

Here is what works for sure, and very simple to use: xvid4psp . I'm going to assume you mean xvid/ac3/avi

    1) open your video

    2) format => avi

    3) video encoding => use one of the xvid presets , press the button beside the drop down menu to configure settings (e.g. quantizer or bitrate etc...)

    4) audio encoding => use one of the ac3 presets e.g. 384k or 640k

    5) press encode!

    Cheers

I'll try out XViD4PSP in a few. I just thought I'd reply with this info first

This is problematic . VFR = variable frame rate . You will get desync issues with a simple conversion because AVI container doesn't support VFR

I think xvid4psp's default conversion attempts to "fix" it by using a simple avisynth script , but just to give you a heads up warning

Sorry for the delay in response.
I tried the version of xvid4psp that's linked here and it resulted in an error, warning me that my RAM, files or I forget might be corrupt. I then learned that the version linked here is pretty old, so I downloaded the latest. I left it running overnight and when I went to check the finished file today, the AVI was in 2.0. I know that from the log I posted, you can see that the MP4 contains both a 2.0 and the 5.1 stream. Unfortunately, I don't know how to specify that I want to 5.1 stream. I'm going to try running it again and take specific notes to report back to you on. It's not much help to you for me to post "general" errors.

  11. Use yamb to remux the mp4 (uncheckmark the 2.0 stream) , this way any conversion software has no choice but to use the 5.1 audio

Before I go further, here are some screenshots I took, just to show what steps I've been taking and such. Here's the Gspot info on the file, before even attempting to do anything with it:

Basically the same, but from within XviD4PSP:

I should've cropped this better. What I was trying to point out are the settings I'm using on the right of the image:

    From within VirtualDub... success! Yes?:

    ...or no?:

Also attached is the MediaInfo report.

So, I basically got all working, other than actually playing the file. That is, from within VirtualDub. Any idea why VDub is reporting this error if it knows enough to display that it's a 5.1?

  13. not sure, you can try using the 5.x instead of 6.x beta , it seems less buggy

you probably have system filter/codec/splitter issues , from the vdub file information it looks like the program is trying to open the mp4 directly in vdub. If you know how to use avisynth you can write a script to open it in vdub (or xvid4psp) and it should work for sure - the older 5.x versions wrote the script for you, not sure about the 6.x versions

do you have aac enabled in the ffdshow configuration ?

do you have ac3 acm installed ?

do you have an mp4 splitter installed ?

I believe I do have those components installed. However, I just downloaded them all and will install them, just to be sure.
As for avisynth, I regret to admit that I have no idea how to write the scripts for it :/

    1 - I believe so. 2 - Yes. 3 - Yes.

  16. remove the 2-ch audio (remux in yamb , keeping only video + 6-ch audio), then open the mp4 in graphstudio, what does it show?
