Does it mean the blu-ray DVD player can connect an external hard drive to play any HD video files or HD movies saved in that hard drive if the blu-ray DVD player has a USB port?

  2. Somethimes it is only used for firmware upgrades, but some models allow you to plug in a USB storage device and play files, it depends on the make/model.

Even those that do play from an external device sometimes only play certain files. Some might play MKV/MP4/AVI, some might only play AVI.

Best to read up on the machine's specs before you buy.

  3. It varies by model but at the very minimum it will play MP3's and JPEG from a key drive, some models support DivX and MKV.

It should all be explained in the player's operation manual.

Also note 99% of them will be limited to fat32 which means no files larger than 4gb.

Is it possible to connect an external hard drive to an HDTV to play the HD video directly, by the way?

That would depend on the TV's own functionality.
