You forgot to mention DVD Decrypyer. It is still my most used for DVDs There was a time a few years ago when few movies worked with this program. Any longer now it seems that I find few that it wont work with.

Also not mentioned is Fab..Passport for BRs. and Make MKV.

I use DVDFab Decrypter for newer titles, and DVD Shrink for older titles. Love both!

RipBot for Blu-ray backup, after decrypting with AnyDVD. I still use DVD Shrink and ImgBurn for main movie DVD backups. The backed up movies themselves are stored on hard drives for easy access in ISO format. The burned backups are the archive in case of HDD failure. I also use XviD4PSP for older DVDs with the X.264 videos on the HDDs, and also backed up to DVD media.

My usual method is similar to yours. In place of the last two, however, I use HDConvertToX and BDRB. Just personal preference.

This poll is more about the ripping part, not encoding or authoring. All the programs i listed rip the contents with the exception of anydvd.

I wouldn't call any of the programs that have no decryption capability a ripping program. They have to be used in combination with decrypters most of the time.

And AnyDVD has a built-in ripper.

    I use:
    AnyDVD HD
    BD Rebuilder
    DVD Rebuilder
    DVDShrink (rarely)
DVDDecrypter (only for its IFO rip mode combined with AnyDVD HD)

Then you should use the word "decrypting" in the title. And some of the programs listed don't decrypt. "Backing up" says to me the entire process, from decrypting to reencoding/transcoding to authoring to burning, everything needed to get it into whatever format you want.

Don't need to say decrypting,to me backing up is getting the files to the hdd whether from a home made movie or hollywood movie.

Just to save arguments i changed the poll title to mean exactly what i wanted, should have done that in the first place.

  15. I checked other. There should be a "combination of the above" choice. I use anydvd to actually rip discs but then use bdrb for blurays and dvd shrink for dvds.

  16. I'm puzzled that you included DVD2SVCD, and someone actually voted for it.

I used it back in the day, but wow, how old is that program now?

Never mind, 5 years old apparently.

"Ripping" is the process of extracting contents from a disc.
It's not the same as copying.
And it does not necessarily have to remove any encryptions.

DVD Decryptor still works for most DVDs.

  18. DVD Decrypter is my first choice, with DVDFab for stubborn DVDs and Blu-Ray. I'll try DVDFab Passkey soon.
