  1. I have an AVI file with AAC audio, that i need to convert to having an MP3 audio track instead in order to play in on my standalone DVD player.
Now the only ways i've found to do that would entail re-encoding the entire AVI with AlltoAVI or something similar, which seems like overkill to me. After all the video stream is ok. I only want to change the audio stream.
Is there a way de-mux convert to AAC then re-mux leaving the video stream untouched?

Open the file in AVI Demux. Make sure Video is set to Copy, change Audio to MP3, configure and save a new video. AVI Demux does not add file extensions when it saves, so name you file with .avi on the end.

  3. It seems to be just what I am looking for, but for some reason the file comes out without audio at all.
    I've set it to:

    Stereo
    CBR
    Quality 2
    Bitrate 192

When using the calculator it even shows the projected audio size.
But when saving what it shows is:
    Phase: Saving
    Video Codec: Copy
    Audio Coded: MP3
    Container AVI

    but audio size as "0"
and the saved file then contains no audio stream at all.
in the plugins folder of avidemux there a file called "libADM_ae_lame.dll" so i soppose the codec should be there.
    What am I missing?

  4. You could try VirtualDub instead of AviDemux. You'll have to install LameACM and an ACM AAC decoder.

    1) File -> Open Video File
    2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy (don't reencode video)
    3) Audio -> Full Processing Mode (reencode audio)
    4) Audio -> Conversion... (if necessary)
    5) Audio -> Compression... (Lame ACM, set properties)
    6) File -> Save as AVI

I do the same thing occasionally. It's a piece of cake to use Avanti to convert the AAC audio from the video file (input as source 1) to a separate MP3, WAV, or whatever file. Then to jagabo's excellent Virtualdub instructions, simply add one step:

3a) Audio -> Audio from other file (point to new file)

    Simple and fast.

You have to tell AviDemux how to deal with the multi channel input, which is not compatible with MP3.

Under "Audio" where you selected "MP3" there is a button "Filters".
And that has "Mixer", in that choose "Stereo".

    Should work now.

  7. It seems there was something wrong with the source file. After trying all your suggestions with no better result i tried the process on another file which worked. So i guess the original AVI was broken.
Thx for your help everyone. AviDemux still comes in handy.
