So I was just curious, what sort of things can be done to maintain a DV camera and keep it recording at its peak quality? I already know to use cleaning tapes, but is there anything else that I can do to maintain my camera, like perhaps parts that can be replaced? I'm completely green about this sort of thing so pardon me if this is kind of a retarded question.

My DV camera is fairly old. I've provided a link to a small snippet of its raw recording, for you guys to possibly evaluate its performance. The camera model is Sony DCR-TRV20.

    The clip is 16:9.

I've found MiniDV camcorders to be durable. You need to avoid dropping them or exposing to water or dirt. They even communicate dirty heads with increasing pixelation errors.

I've yet to wear one out. One D8 camcorder locked up with a "moisture" sensor error even when there was no moisture. I've seen other people force a tape load or eject causing damage. Once they fail, there is little you can do to fix them.

Older consumer MiniDV camcoders had 4:3 shaped sensors that caused reduced vertical resolution in 16:9 wide mode. Higher priced and some recent consumer models have 16:9 shaped sensors as shown here.
