I have a 4.37 mkv file that I could reduce to 4.13 cutting some parts. The problem is that when I convert it to AVCHD with TSmuxer i get a 4.57 gb result (oversized by 100 mb!!).
What can I do to make that fit into one dvd5? I've already cut everything I could with mkvmerge.

    thanks a lot

You could re-encode the video to a smaller size.

You could re-encode the audio to a smaller size.

You could use a DVD+R discs as the capacity of DVD+R is a little larger than the capacity of DVD-R. You could also try to overburn, which might (or might not) allow you to burn the entire thing to one single layer DVD.

    You could cut more parts.

You could use VSO ConvertXtoDVD to author the DVD5 and it will shrink the file rather than cutting the file or converting it to some other format before authoring.

  4. Or you could author your DVD larger then DVD5 size to hard drive and use DVDshrink to reduce the size. Shrink to 5 also does the same thing and they are free to use.

  5. He probably doesn't want to use convertxtodvd or dvd shrink, because that would make it a regular DVD, and you'd lose HD

If your video is cropped, you would have black borders to make it AVCHD compatible anyway (1920x1080, 1280x720 full frame). So this requires re-encoding anyway. You could use uncropmkv for this , or multiavchd

I can't find those DVD+R in my city
Converting to dvd is not an option. I want HD and DVD max resolution is 586p. I would have downloaded a dvdrip instead of a 720p x264 version.
I found an option in multiavchd "fit all" that let me re-encode the movie to fit in the dvd5. Right now I'm burning the result to test.
    Thanks a lot

If the mkv has dts audio then you could re-encode just the audio to 640kb ac3 and not have to re-encode the video.

    Why didn't you post yesterday?
I tried what you said and the audio went from 1 gb to 430 mb!

Thanks a lot for the tip.

+R or -R is not an issue. Imgburn will happily burn to either. Your problem will be playback if the resolution is not compliant (as has been pointed out). Very few of the "downloadable" files are compliant. Unless the source was exactly 16:9, is has most likely been cropped. While a program like TSMuxer will happily create the structures using non-compliant material, many players will not play them back correctly or at all. The only fix is to put the missing letterbox bars back in and re-encode. MultiAVCHD (which incorporates UncropMKV) can do this, as can AVCHDCoder. It is also worth considering re-encoding the audio down to AC3 640 kbps at the same time in order to get the best video bitrate you can.

If you hover over that setting in multiavchd it will show you all the allowable bitrates for the audio that you can manually set,384 is the default and 640 is the maximum.

384 is good enough for if the acc is stereo,640 is best for 5.1 audio.
