    Hello all,
I just started using Windows Movie Maker, and after I click any tools bar ( titles, etc), the bar gets stuck on my screen.
The only way I can remove it, is to reboot.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Not really the most stable of applications but try the following first.

    Click Start , click Run.
    Type the following command: %systemroot%\inf

NOTE : There are no spaces at all in the preceding command line.

Click OK to open the INF folder.
Locate the file moviemk.inf , Right-click the file, and then click Install.

Note: You will be asked to place your windows XP cd rom in the drive.

Important: Reboot the system once completed.

Try again and report if issue remains.

    Don't have a cd rom.
Anything else I can do when this occurs?

I've only used Movie Maker a hanful of times for some small projects. The only time I've had issues is when pictures, video or audio to import were in a format (codec) that MM didn't like.

PS: Go get a cd-rom. You can get one for $10-$15US.
    Have a good one,

No cdrom ... almost unheard of these days ... not recommended method but it wont cause the system not to run as per normal.

    Follow:

1: Download windows movie maker 2

2: Boot into safemode and delete > program files/Movie Maker (only movie makers folder)

3: Reboot, then install the new movie maker which you downloaded

    4: Reboot, try wmm again

There are other files related to the performance of wmm residing in the system32 folder ... these may have been updated / tampered ... without running sfc/scannow + xp install cd you won't know if this be the problem.

Also give malwarebytes a run on the system ... a general health checkup.

I followed your instructions, but the download does not include Movie Maker.

After spending hours getting my original movie maker back, I realized that the link you gave me was for Vista or Windows 7 - I have xp.

    Hi Neomaine,
    Thanks for reply.
I've got 3 dvd drives. What I don't have is an XP cd rom-which they ask you to insert.
Bjs- who told me to download the link (and caused me numerous headaches because it is for VISTA of WINDOWS 7) caused me to lose Movie Maker and had a terrible time getting it back.
My original problem is that when I try to insert a video into the timeline ( tried avi, divx, wma), I get an error message.
Do you know of a codec that will make this work?
    Thanks,
    Paul

I think it only works with DV-AVI, MPEG, and WMV filetypes...

    Thanks for the reply,
I tried avi and mpeg. Both gave me an error when I tried to insert it in the timeline.

Actually, he said DV-AVI. AVI is just a container and can contain video and audio of many different types of codecs. As a catch-all, and fairly common one, you could try installing ffdshow.

Corruption may also have happened - especially if the clip is from the web
What's your source? It should be as pure as the driven snow in it's native type
