I don't know what happened. I was just going to try capturing video for the first time on a new Windows 7 PC. Plugged a 4-pin-to-4-pin firewire cable to the HV20, then to the appropriate port on my PC. The HV20 started emitting smoke from the cassette compartment and I heard the ding of it shutting off. I immediately unplugged it, but it was too late. HV20 won't turn on. Anyone else have a similar experience? I just reported it to Canon customer service, but if they're like other customer service departments, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to get anywhere. I doublechecked the setup of the firewire connections inside the PC, and looked in the Canon manual to make sure 4-pin-to-4-pin is supported (it is). I just don't know what happened and I'm so bummed.

like mja said a 4 pin firewire cable has NO power only data lines. if yours does you hooked up the connections wrong inside your computer. not canon's fault.

Thanks for the responses. I did confirm that the firewire bracket is connected correctly to the motherboard, but MJA, could you explain what you meant by a fuse? Do you mean a fuse inside the camcorder?

you'd have to disassemble the cam to find the circuit boards and look for burned parts.

before you connect anything else to that firewire port i'd check the 4 wires with a voltmeter. if there is any current, positive or negative, there is something wrong with it.

it makes no difference. 4 pin firewire cables only have data wires. no power at all.

you can stop posting your myth. a 4 pin firewire port can't be "fried" by a cable with NO electrical power at all.
