I want to remove commercial spots from this 1.5gb avi files I have of 1 hour episodes. What is the best program out there that can accomplish this preferably without having to recode, if not, it's ok if it needs to recode. The program can be either free or commercial ($150 or less) as long as it can do the job without getting the audio&video out of sync. To me, maintaining the picture quality is very important (therefore the re-coding usually degrades pic quality which is why I prefer not to re-code unless necessary)
I am currently recording in AVI format but can also record in MPEG format as well.
Thanks.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

what kind of avi? use gspot or mediainfo
virtualdub or avidemux should be able to handle most types of video in avi container , using direct stream copy mode (just cutting sections out, no re-encoding)
