    What can I use to convert M4V to avi or WM? Is there anything that is free? I will only do this a couple of times so don't want anything fancy.

    My video file that I got from her must be copy right protected or something because it won't convert or work with anything except play in itunes.

    If it came from itunes then it is full of drm. I don't know of a way to convert an itunes file. Maybe someone else will.

    If "she" got it off iTunes, it belongs to her and not you. There is no real legal way to help you.
