Just bought me a 32' Vizio and how and what do I need to get HD channels. I have the basic direct tv package, so do I need to upgrade the package or will some of the basic packages have HD channels?
What types of cables do I need if any? When I was setting it up doing the autoscan I did not let it finish, but it had analog channels up top and digital channels at the bottom, and it seemed it was only finding analog channels. I am a novice at this so any info will be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

Yep, you will have to contact Direct and get an HD box and HD service. I think that they are charging $10 a month for HD access, but that covers all of the TV's in the house. (They try to charge for the box, but you can usually talk them into a freebie if you commit to a year or 2 year contract.) You will need an HDMI cable for anything that you hook up to the set. Direct will bring a cable for the set top box. If you need more, I highly recommend Monoprice (Monoprice.com). Very good cables at very good prices. While you are waiting for the Direct box, try hooking an antenna up to your TV. I use a plain old bow-tie antenna, that I got from Best Buy many years ago. It brings in about 15 OTA HD channels. (Depending on your location, this will vary.)

Big thanks man, you pretty much answered everything. I was like, the quality sure does not look good as it did at Walmart. Now I know why. Thanks for the info.

As PhoneMatt said...you'll need a HD reciever....depending on if you're under contract with directv...a lot of times you can talk them into upgrading to HD for free. especially if your contract is up...their always looking for a way to lockup a customer for a few more years.

Yes, tell them your basic cable alternative gets you local channels in HD via Clear QAM. Ask what they can do.
Try to hang up after first offer. If they keep talking ask what more they can do. Trick is to get to their retention specialist.
Then start the negotiation from there. Pretend you don't care about most other "cable channels".
Main goal is to get the HD box at minimal cost without signing to a high class plan.
BTW: Doesn't WalMart have signs every yard or so saying you need high def service to get high def?Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.
