I have decided that I want to buy some commercial software to convert video between the various formats.

So I went to the obvious place and googled "buy video conversion software" and thousands of hits were returned, so I naturally started at the top. Reading the websites and downloading some trials to test the products.

After the third download it starting getting interesting and by the time I got to number 6 it wasn't funny anymore. All six products from supposedly different websites/publishers are almost identical. The GUI's differ slightly and so do some of the features, but it's the same software. Period!

    AVS Video Converter

    1 year $39.00 - Unlimited $59.00
Paying the above entitles you to ALL the software on the website.

    Talk about world domination.

Now the software is actually pretty good, but the way we are duped into thinking we are buying something different is not on.
One common thread, other than the software, is that all the websites are rather confusing to navigate and most sites throw a huge number of various products at you and you eventually don't know where you are and why you visited the site in the first place.

I found this whole exercise rather interesting.

Does anyone have any video conversion software to recommend not based on the above software?

But you can do most conversion using free converters like xmedia recode, handbrake, xvid4psp, avidemux, staxrip. Same or even better quality as you can usually adjust more settings and use high quality profiles.

  3. Winff, http://winff.org/ . I have had great luck with this free piece of software which is a front end for the versatile ffmpeg. It will convert almost everything flawlessly.
