This is early technology. Next gen Adobe products will use it for some tasks. Don't expect much yet.
Google "cuda".

thanks. ya i know about the cuda. i was looking for something about mainstream gpus though not the rippoff 2500 dollar quadro gpus. guess the quality is still not there for it to be professionally usable?

NLE cards have long offloaded into GPU. Look at the old Matrox RT.X100 cards + Premiere, for example. Granted, these were dedicated editing cards, and also ran $1,000-2,000+ (plus Premiere)

ya but bringing this to everyday gpu's is something totally new and cool

I'm not counting on this being significant with current cards. Most initial development is on downloading movies to iPhones.

Some consumer card can be modded in quadro. 8800GTS>>Quadro4600, see below.

The gain with modded card was three times faster.
Sofware:

Hardware assisted:

Keep in mind that at this time hardware assisted compression can`t beat X264 in terms of quality. -
It hasn't happened much because frankly hardware assist isn't really needed except for decode/encode and processing/effects filters, both of which already are beginning to transition to the GPU.

thanks danno. very cool info there. guess its not worth the trouble yet. are those pics of your setup after you moded the card?
