9911u "TBC" - creates tearing at the top of the frame?

I've noticed that on a few tapes, turning on the TBC function on the 9911U actually creates top-screen tearing. Turning it off removes the problem. Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior from a recent JVC with TBC?

(This only happens on a few tapes; for those I am simply capturing with TBC/NR off. On other tapes, TBC definitely fixes problems and improves the overall quality of the capture.)

For some tapes JVC TBC make the things worse. No way to fix that. Try with TBC from Panasonic VCR or external TBC.

This can happen on certain tape errors. Try another VCR for these tapes.

External TBC won't fix this. That's not what an external TBC is for.
What's the difference between TBCs?

Stabilizer on, TBC off --- may work. Or Panasonic 1980.
Or just pay somebody that restores video to fix those few tapes (probably cheaper, easier).

There's nothing to fix; I turn off the TBC and all is well. No issues on the 1980 or other decks either. (Seriously: if you have more than a few tapes, get a 1980 and do it yourself; you'll have such a heightened appreciation for the format, and seeing old memories brought to life by your own hand is well worth the price of admission... a price that's rather low these days.)

Maybe it's only JVC TBCs that have this issue... hmm.
