I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ28. When I watch an official, store-bought DVD on it, I can often see some very noticeable blockiness. It is most visible when a camera pan. These same discs played just fine on my old Liteon recorder. Is there any way I can improve the pixelation?

There shouldn't be an "pixelation". Likely a faulty player or it simply uses a lower quality chipset than your old player. Assuming you're upconverting and you have an HD TV, change the ouput (480/720/1080) to see which looks best on your TV.
