I've got 3 PC's on the home network, all with wireless connection to the same modem:

    1. laptop with Vista Home Premium,
    2. laptop with XP Media Center 2005
    3. desktop with XP Pro SP2

The speed of DSL connection is 1.000 kBps (download).

    An example of the problem:
When I'm downloading a file "A" from an FTP server "B", using any of the laptops, I'm getting the full speed of downloading, nearly 1.000 kBps.
But when I'm using the desktop PC to download the same file "A" from an FTP server "B", I'm getting only from 204-307 kBps, an average of approx. 256 kBps.
Something is choking that connection on the desktop PC if I'm downloading a single file from a single source.

But if I'm downloading, say, 4 files with that desktop PC, each file will be downloading at approx. 256 kBps, so I will get nearly the full potential speed of 1.000 kBps.

Anyone knows what's causing this and how to solve it, please?
    Thank you.

Do you use a download manager on the desktop that might be 'managing' the download in some way? Just a wild guess.

To the user all that'll occur is a black box will pop up and dissapear. Sometimes the TCP/IP can develop issues, web browsing, downloading, etc . Before windows xp, one had to uninstall and reinstall the tcp/ip, xp and after it can simply be reset using the command I gave. In some occasions uninstalling the packet scheduler can be helpful. I was once tech support for a major ISP and these things I am aware of. On the outside check your router settings it could be allocating bandwidth.

I have disabled the packet scheduler with no positive effect.
I will try to reset TCP/IP later, as you suggested.
    Thank you.

    Resetting TCP/IP didn't help.

I used the following CMD from Microsoft support pages: Start ->run->netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

    Any other suggestion, please.
