  1. I received "Taiyo Yuden Premium Silver Thermal Lacquer 8X DVD-R Media 200 Pack in Cake Box" from Super Media Store. I was surprised how thin it has became, just like those cheap Memorex and Maxell. Long time ago, when CD-R was new, one Taiwan manufacturer told me "choose the thick one"; when DVD was new, I was told, newer and denser "plastic" will be used soon, it should be as good as older thicker "plastic". Do they really use new "plastic", or more corn was cut? Anyone has insight for this?

This isn't anything new, people on this forum and others have randomly noted receiving orders of TY that are "thinner" than their other batches for a couple years now. Not really sure whats behind this, other than some batches might be mfr'd using different tooling. Each time this is reported, there is buzz about TY quality going down the tubes, but that hasn't quite materialized yet: the "thin" discs are apparently no better/worse than the "thick" ones, and you're about as likely to get "thick" ones next time you order. If a substantial majority begin reporting they've received "thin" discs, we'll know that has become the new TY standard. With the TY/JVC branding deal now in place, its not real clear whether TY will continue to offer TY-branded discs for much longer anyway- we may be discussing "JVC" discs next year.

My place of business buys TYs in bulk, and what orsetto described is on the money. Just when we grow accustomed to the thin discs, the thick ones return. Occasionally, we have found both thick and thin discs in the same stack. It does not seem standardized. The good news is that the quality has remained the same across the board -- which is what counts.

    I wouldn't be too concerned.
