Philips DVDR5520 -looking for firmware upgrade/hack for mpeg4

Hi ,
i bought this model, Philips DVDR5520 with Digital TV Tuner
the problem is that the digital channels in my country are mpeg4 and this model supports mpeg2

i can find the digital channels through scan but i can only listen to them without any picture

does anybody know if there is a firmware upgrade or hack so ican receive mpeg4 channels

or its a hardware issue that i will never manage to solve

I have same recorder, and if you could get it to work reliably its not too bad (a bit slow). Your question however is not solvable. The Digital tuner in there actually probably? supports dvbt1, which is the transmission method, rather than dvbt2 which is a newer higher efficiency method (used to xmit HD/freeview/UK/mpeg4). Actually in your country maybe they broadcast std def in mpeg4? I doubt whether this m/c can be hacked tho as the tuners inside are generic suitable for the widest range of countries. Silly to buy it without checking first ..

UK present mpeg2 broadcast using 64mod? Dvbt std def.
Future mpeg4 broadcast using xxxxxx? dvbt2 High Def. (A world first)
Complete Digital switchover 2012 .. increased Signal strength all round.

I suppose you want any dvd to be playable in other makes of players, right?

I have a feeling rabidDog is right, unless you know a super tech familiar with that brand...I kinda doubt it.

Beware that I have a similar model, and it is having issues keeping the current date in memory, and the digital tuner overheats and goes blank!!! so, I'm not too pleased with the philips brand
