Hello forum,
I have two questions. First a question regarding losslessnes of MPG files when compared to actual DVD quality movies (also using VOB2MPG vs AVS Video Converter) and secondly a question about VOB comparable formats.
I have been using MPG files because they are a single large file so I am able to use them in a play list format. I also thought they looked decent and not very lossy when compared to a DVD played in WMP. I have been backing up DVD movies using the method of DVD FAB (in DVD FAB I use the "Full Movie" option) for decrypting and ripping the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders. Then I convert the files with VOB2MPG. However, I decided to give AVS Video Converter a try because of all its different file type options.
I have to say though AVS has much versatility with file formats, they seem to be to hastily converted or something because post conversion of VOB file to a 1080p mpg file was very fritzy at parts, as in small choppy bits. Also, I noticed that the MPG file is significantly smaller than the VOB files in the Video_TS folder (the movie by the way is The Island). Can someone tell me why the seemingly simple program VOB2MPG creats a better file than the much hyped AVS program?
For my second question I would like to know if there are file formats that are like VOB files in the respects of having subtitle option type objects in the file but are of a single file type like that of MPG (This goes back to being able to play full videos in a playlist format).
Any input on this matter would be great!
Thank you very much,

VOB2MPG does not convert the files. It simply repackaged the video and audio from the VOB container to the mpg container. What you see is identical to the source.
AVS Video Converter is re-encoding the video, and by the sounds of it you have chosen a HD output setting (1080) which means the video is also being resized up several times. All this is why the quality has dropped severely.
If you want to keep the original quality, have asubs, and have a single file, look at the MKV container. There are several posts regarding transferring VOBs to MKV with no loss.
Thank you very much.
VOB2MPG now makes much more since why the files are they same size
.
Thank you very much again
