    Hi,

I am trying to import some .mp4 files but it keeps saying unsupported video file. However I have imported and joined these videos in the past and am wondering what the problem may be. It is not a trial version and I have tried all the updates. I believe it was CS4 I was using back then so I do not see what the problem is. Does anyone have any clue on what I might try?

    Thanks.

MP4 is a container, and not all MP4s are alike. Some programs will work with some MP4 material, and not with others. If you have been able to use these particular files, or if these files come a camera that you have been able to edit files from previously then perhaps you are missing a suitable codec.

Start with Mediainfo to determine what exactly is in your files.

Looks to be pretty standard stuff. Simplest soluton at this stage would be to convert the file to Huffyuv (lossless) and edit with that. The source file is small, the lossless version will be bigger, but not huge (relatively speaking). You can do this conversion easily in AVI Demux or Xvid4PSP.

Before that you might try installing the latest FFDShow to see if that helps Premiere load the file.

I'm sure the answer above is spot on, and I'm not aiming to contradict it, but I recently converted some MP4 files downloaded from YouTube by simply exporting from Quicktime Pro. If it plays, it should export. I used the animation codec to preserve as much quality as possible during subsequent editing (huge files though!).

Thanks guys, I got Mainconcept's MPEG Pro HD 4 — H.264/AVC & MPEG and then updated my ffdshow and all seems to be working fine.
