I've been trying to write a dvd for the past two days with Encore and the first avi file transcodes fine, the second one for some reason that Encore won't deign to tell me causes it to stop. Is there another format that i can convert the avi's to that might avert this from happening?
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

what was the difference between the 2 avi files? use mediainfo (view=>text)
You could convert to DVD compliant MPEG2 for import , which Encore will not transcode (it will allow pass thru).
You could use HCEnc for this, but it requires avisynth knowledge. So you could use AVStoDVD , which uses HCEnc and automates & simplifies the process, and just take the asset to import into Encore.
