I've created AVI files using VirtualDubMod
I'm using Riva to create FLV's
Problem: the files are 2.5 the original avi file size
If I tweak the settings to make smaller, then my video will be degraded

What's the best way of keeping the avi as much like the original as possible and making and FLV?

Also: I've seen in a few places VirtualDub mentioned with FLV
Can I use it to make FLV's?
I've done a few searches and all I can fine is info about how to make avi's from FLV's

    Thanks!

    Nope, virtualdub can't create flv.

Try instead make a mp4 with h264 video and aac audio using for example handbrake or xvid4psp. You can then get lower file size and keep good quality. And, yes it works FINE with flash!

But if you want the old flv with the flv codec you can't do much to improve the quality.

tried handbrake and i get a file size of 10mb - the original is 8mb

that's all weird to me: i thought making an flv, u were degrading and making smaller?

ok... i tried and it works with mp4's nicecly
small problem: it won't play unless the WHOLE video has been downloaded
    like the quicktime player
    this sucks!
is there anything i can do? or do i have to go back to using flv's?

  6. remux it with mp4box (yamb is the gui) , and it will move the moov atom to the beginning , so it will stream immediately

Change the bitrate settings to get lower file size. You can even set the desired output file size in handbrake or xvid4sps(under video encoding settings).

And to get the mp4 to play directly you must change the header in the mp4, xvid4psp does this for you directly, or use MP4 FastStart on the mp4, see http://www.datagoround.com/lab/ .

edit: Remuxing with yamb works similar as mp4 faststart.

    trying yamb

this works fast, so quite good

i didnt want to use xvid4psp because it sounded as though i would get video that was good for psp's - i.e. small

would u recommend using this as opposed to using handbrake and then yamb?

let me know what u think

    THANKS

xvid4psp maybe was a psp encoder but now it's a very good all-on-one solution that has profiles for most devices and you can adjust all settings manually.

But handbrake (and then yamb or mp4 faststart) is also another good option, both are based on same h264 encoder so you will get same video quality from both.
