I managed to dodge the bullet on the last upgrade fiasco, so I may wait a while this time.

I saw this on their site about the 1.01.12 update:
We have tracked the problem to the Internet update process for WD TV Live firmware version 1.01.12. The firmware version is functioning normally, the problem intermittently occurred when using the Internet to update WD TV Live to version 1.01.12. If you've successfully installed update 1.01.12, there's nothing further you need to do.

I have two so will install it on one and see if it bricks it. I betcha they are extremely careful this time though and hopefully learned their lesson.

    Release 1.01.17 (1/11/10)

    * Improves the reliability of the WD TV Live firmware upgrade manager by incorporating a more robust method of upgrading firmware over the internet.
    * Includes all previously released updates.

Seems it's up on the regular site now.
I see no need for updating as I don't use the networking features yet.
Now if they said we fixed the subtitle problems in MKVs, I'd do the update.

    I will wait a few days 8) , it's surprising they didn't add any additional features .

WD TV Live firmware upgrade manager improvement doesn't do anything to my box, so I can wait

It's a pointless update. The feature should simply have been rolled into the next real update.

  12. Ok well worked totally fine on my first WDTV live so gonna do the 2nd one. Then again didn't have problems when the rest of you numbnuts did either so maybe I'm just lucky in firmware upgrades.

I got burned by the .12 fw update, so I was weary of the latest fw. I upgraded one (of 3) WD Live boxes, and have experienced network connectivity problems, which I was not experiencing on two boxes with fw .11. I "exchanged" my updated box at local store, and I will wait for a fw update that fixes some of the known problems.

As others have stated, it took WD more than a month to "fix" the .12 fw, and none of the known bugs/issues were addressed in the .17 fw update. Disappointed that WD couldn't do more more for their customers.

Hmm, some big names here seem to be using this box.

Got a link to user reviews and "current issues" and whatnot ? Does it deal with both "packed bitstream" and "non packed bitstream" xvid avis ?

edit: oh oh, http://wdtvforum.com/main/index.php?board=3.20 seems to list nothing but a range of user problems ...

It has no problems with packed or unpacked bitstream Xvid or Divx. The only Xvid feature it doesn't support is three warp point GMC. As far as I know, there are no set-top media players that support it.

Some media players have fewer problems, some more.

The Popcorn Hour C200 is definitely better than the WDTV Live -- but it costs $299 vs the Live's ~$120. The A200 looks promising at $180.

I use an HTPC for most of my playback (usually running MPCHC or Boxee). The WDTV Live is used in the bedroom, connected to my HTPC via ethernet. It's fine for me there. I don't need DVD menus because I strip all my DVD rips down to the movie only. I have very few files that the unit can't play flawlessly. I also run PlayOn on the HTPC so I can stream Netflix to the bedroom.

If I could only have one device I'd probably pick the C200.

I like the WD TV Live. It isn't perfect, but it's really good for the price.

popcorn hour has many issues as well...such as networking.

I have Live...very nice. It got a bad rap because of the bricking. But let's be honest, I have NEVER trusted internet updates. You are always better to download to usb key and update. I never had a brick issue because I did this. Just common sense. So much can go wrong with the auto update BS. Everyone should have learned this lesson I hope

True, and that is one of the main reason I went with the WD Live. The WD Live does (almost) everything that I need it to do, with the exception of streaming Netflix. I have boxes in my children's rooms, so that I am able to watch my television. The single biggest convenience is not having to look for DVDs anymore, we just use the Live to stream the movie from our home server.
I had looked at the Popcorn C-200, but there was a long back order, and I was reading about popcorn's software problems.

All things considered, I still recommend the WD Live to people that can't wait for the newer boxes to be released.

    Hi MJA,
What do you mean "Laptop to WD using AirLink 101 AWLL6070"? My WD live TV doesn't recongnize AirLink 101 AWLL6070.
    Thanks

Best Buy has them (WD TV Live) on sale for $120. That's the normal NewEgg price but some folks don't like to mail order.

The Popbox looks very compelling. It will come out at $129 with ethernet and $149 with Wi-Fi. It will be able to access web content with a simple interface like the Boxee. I love my first gen WDTV, but it might get demoted to a different TV.

I do wonder what the comparison between 1-200 and popbox will be. the popbox will have to be missing certain features that the ah00 has, since the poxbox will come n cheaper and have netflix. syabas just introduced the a200 last week and the popbox follows only seven or eight weeks later
