    Good day all,

    In trying to upgrade firmware 15-17 on my new PHILIPS DVP5996K/98, I killed the player, although there in no excuse I must admit the Philips site info. is somewhat misleading, and this is strictly to help others from falling in the same hole;

    Since there were no action; USB flash drive wasn't blinking + no on-screen response, just upgrading for a loong while, I removed the USB drive..

    It is stated; 5. A dialogue will now appear - follow the instructions to update the software of your player. Observation; (There was no dialogue, just "upgrading", for a long while )
    It is stated; 6. When the disc tray is ejected, you may remove the USB device. Observation; ( the moment you plug the USB flash drive in the tray ejects!)

    I would truly appreciate any input/suggestion on how to revive this player, if any.

    Regards

    When I upgraded the firmware on my $700 Philips DVD recorder (many many many years ago) it said DO NOT TOUCH the machine until the firmware update is complete and the screen says "complete". I left the house for an hour.....went shopping....just to make sure i didn't mess up my machine.

    I guess you didn't follow that advise?

    Try the exact same firmware update again and hope that it works. If that doesn't do anything, try to install an older version - if you can find one.

    You can pay Philips to repair it, but the cost might exceed the cost of a new player. If your player is still under warranty you might be able to get Philips to repair it, but I don't know what their policy is on this type of thing. If they make the firmware available to the public, they might not view a botched upgrade as something to hold against you.

    jiman98,
    Thanks for the suggestion but my problems are more complicated than that; the player is unresponsive period (Only PHILIPS on LCD) and to make matters worst the player was bought in the US and shipped abroad...

    the only way to fix a bad flash is to remove the bios chip and have it reflashed in a chip burner. that would require someone with the proper equipment and possibly required de-soldering the chip form the motherboard and then re-soldering it back. most likely cost more than the unit if you could find a tech to do it.

  8. I extract from my player firmware. It's for 5990/12 but with this you can get back HDMI!!!!. Use a serial cable + MTKTool_2.37 (from rar file). After recover, rename upgrade firmware (DVP5996K_98.bin) to DVP5990_12.bin and make update.

    vb6rocod,

    Many thanks, I'm now hopeful but still need your help please;
    Could you be a little more specific with exact details on how to do this;

    A) Connecting the serial cable; the DVP5996k has no serial connection, could you explain please?
    B) Once (and if I'm lucky.) it is connected, how do I load the firmware using the MTKTool please?

    Kindly forgive my ignorance in this matter.
    Regards.

    vb6rocod,

    Ok, did some research and have a better understanding now;
    A) My PC doesn't have a serial connection, it has USB, HDMI, VGA, eSATA, Fire Wire, ADSL and one Expansion Port 3, what cable/connection should I use please?
    B) Can the actual firmware upgrade (5996k/98 V17) be used?

    Many thanks.
