    VirtualDub won't accept the files I want to join because they have a "DirectShow codec" not a "VFW compatible codec".

    What's the best alternative??

    You can install the vfw codec for it to work in vdub. Identify it by using gspot or mediainfo on the avi files

    Or, you could use avidemux
