Power to external HDD

Can I use a spare PS to power an external HD adapter? (Sata +IDE to USB adapter). The transformer supplied with the unit's blown up and took a HD with it. I just want to use one molex connector from the spare PS.

Sure, but you would have to use the 20/24 pin ATX power connector to turn on a regular PC PS. Jumper pin 15 to pin 14 on the cable to do that. This is a view of the MB connector. The ATX cable end would be a opposite mirror view. Note the position the locating tab and the shape of the individual connectors to assure you have the correct ones. You can also look for the green and black wires.



And be aware that some PS's may not operate properly without a load on each rail. But give it a try.

Just a minute. Now I'm confused. Do you mean I have to bridge the green and black wires in the 20 pin connector, or I have to extract power from the green and black wires? Do I use one of the 4 pin molex connector?
I'm sorry if my Q. sounds stupid but it cost mi already a 2/3 full 1 tera HDD.

Yes, bridge the green and black - this is needed to just turn the power supply on (normally done thru the M/B from the power switch).
Just try it BEFORE plugging in the drive ... the PS fan should start up at least.

Weird. I have a IDE to USB adapter and it just plugs in and goes.
Of couse it did come with a 110v power adapter that I never used.

The green 'PS ON' wire is a logic level connection. You just bring it to ground level by connecting it to the nearest PS ground terminal. The MB does the same thing, as does the front panel power switch. Then just use one of the regular SATA or Molex power connectors to your drive.
