Blu-ray and Hauppauge HD PVR

If you owned a Blu-ray disc player, and connected it to your Hauppauge HD PVR via component cables and Optical audio cable, could you not backup your BR discs

The hauppauge hd pvr will backup your blu-tay movies and they will play back beautifully with the wd tv media player. you have to install the Arcsoft software with firmware update to allow ps3 platback compatability-M2TS format.
record at the default settings of 13.5 mb per sec/21.5 peak. recording is at real time - 2hrs takes 2hrs to record. the recorded movie will look the same as the disc as the hd-pvr converts the component hd to digital. an added bonus is that the file will be smaller than if recorded with anydvdhd and bd rebuilder -example KING KONG is app. 18 gb for a 3 hr movie. the only negative thing is the build quality of the hd-pvr. I have drilled a half dollar size hole where the small internal fan is located and 3 half inch holes on the bottom case for exhaust. also repeated coupling of rca jacks on unit will eventually break the circuit board connection. afix for this is to put 1/4 inch wood dowels from case to board not allowing the board to flex when connections are made. these mods are easy to do but you have to diassemble unit -access screws are under rubber covers on feet.

Thanks Jim49. Tried it out this morning and yes it does work fine
My Hauppauge hardly gets warm. (Rev E1). In fact the metal case of the BD player is warmer.
As for the plugging and unplugging, yes I can see that would be a problem. In my situation here, I have the cable box upstairs, and the HD PVR downstairs, connected with a 10m component cable and a 10m optical cable. This works just fine, but when I read your post about the plug-unplug danger, I decided to connect the original Hauppauge Component cable (that came with the unit) to the HD PVR, and connect that to the 10m cables with a simple 3-plug RCA inline connector. Now the input component cables are slightly longer, but still no loss of PQ as far as I can tell. And now, when I want to connect the BR player, I disconnect at the RCA connector, and not at the HD PVR. (Does that make sense)? Haven't seen an optical extension, so will still have to plug=unplug that one. And like you, I watch my vids on a media player - the Extremer.
Having tried all this, I still don't have confidence in the future of Blu-ray. I wander through our local Blockbuster store here in Sydney Australia, and often come out empty handed. Very few titles to choose from. I guess most people are happy with normal DVD quality video, which doesn't look all that bad when upscaled onto a nice plasma screen.

Keep your old Blu-ray player with component outputs. After 2010 no Blu-ray player will be allowed include high definition component outputs. After 2013 even standard definition composite will be disallowed. And even with older drives the mandatory downres flag can be activated by any disc. So your days of backint up your Blu-ray discs with the HD PVR may be numbered.
