    i don't know about best but firefox with downloadhelper will get any version of youtube video you want.

    JDownloader ( http://jdownloader.org/ ) does it very nicely, with a choice of formats when available.

    What exactly do you mean by "best"? Of many tried, I am happy with open-source xVideoServiceThief [batch dl via links, always dl's HD version, & good auto converter option employing -sameq switch of ffmpeg] & the free Grab++ & GetIt [offers choice HD or not] functions of OrbitDownloader. Other notables include the free DownloadToolz, VideoCacheView, & Flash patch [for locked vid files]
