Add movies to my DVR so that I can view them on my TV?

Hi -

Sorry if this is the wrong place to find an answer out about this, but I've looked everywhere and I'm hoping someone can help me (or at least point me in the right direction). I have a Direct TV DVR that I'm no longer using and already paid for... so I'd like to make it useful somehow. Since we recently shut off our cable, we've been watching all of our movies and stuff on the comp screen (which is a bit hard on the eyes...) and I got to thinking that I had a perfectly good 120 GB hard drive with a TV hookup sitting in my closet (the DVR, of course) and I would really love to put some of the video that I have on my computer onto it so that I can watch it all on the TV. Past that, I have NO idea what my next step is to figure out how to do that. If anyone can assist, I'd be grateful (and my tired eyes will be, too).

I believe the OS system in a Directv Box - TIVO - ... is LINUX ... and you are going to run into all kinds of challenges.

How about just connecting your TV to it and watch them from your Directv box ... or is it refusing to play them anymore.

I save the movies and TV shows from my HR10-250 Directv box and transfer them to my Panasonic EH50 DVD Recorder with 100 GB harddrive.

Not all the shows and movies ... just the special ones ... worth keeping.

Once you turn off service with Directv, your DVR will not play anything from the hard drive. Unless you hack your DVR.

The shows that are on there now I don't care about at all - if they get erased then it's no big deal - I'm trying to figure out how to _add_ stuff to the drive so that I can play it on the TV. I guess "hacking" the DVR is my only option, which I can't imagine is a problem since the DVR is mine now, and it's not like I'm stealing anything... I just want to use the equipment that I was charged for. Where could I go to learn about "hacking" the DVR? (If you are allowed to point me in that direction, of course...) I would imagine there would be some form of software that would allow me to access the drive... I guess I will go hunting. If anyone has any ideas, though... they're greatly appreciated!
