Ripping Blu Ray to Dual Layer DVD?

Hey all,

I'm a noob and I did research first but couldn't find the answer, so please bear with me...

Is there a way to rip a blu ray and then burn it to a dual layer dvd but still in high def quality. I know 1080p will not work but can I get it to 720p (still high def) and remove all menus and extra feats to get it to fit on a dual layer dvd? Just looking to get high def quality without getting blu ray media as it is still expensive... Thanks for all your help in advance.

First off, welcome to the forums.

Secondly, yes you can backup blu ray to dvd5 (single layer) and dvd9 (dual layer) media. Read through some of these for a better understanding on how to do it.

If you want to lower the quality of a Blu-Ray, why not get the DVD? Modern DVDs come from the same master.

My method is: Anydvd hd -> BD Rebuilder -> BD25 disc using Imgburn. You could use the same proceedure but replace BD25(single layer blu ray media) with BD9(dual layer dvd media). The only precaution I suggest is make sure your player will play BD9 discs. Many players will not play BD9 discs, from what I hear.

I do BD>MKV conversions with RipBot for PC and WDTV Live playback. Most are backed up to a DL disc. Not playable on a set top player.

If you want to convert a BD>DL DVD that will play on a standard set top DVD player, then it has to be encoded and authored to DVD specifications, which generally adds another step, at least for the freeware programs. But, as mentioned, easier to use the DVD version of the video and back that up to a DVD DL instead of starting with a BD disc.

I think that edDV and redwudz both know why you would want to do this and I don't find their replies to be particularly helpful.

Do note that some BluRay players require the DL disc to be burned in AVCHD format and others require BluRay format. http://www.doom9.net has a forum section and somewhere in their they have a list of many BluRay players and which ones require which format. Note that it's been reported that the PS3 will not play full disc backups from BluRay onto any DVD media, but movie only works. I know you are talking about movie only, but I wanted to mention the PS3 thing just in case you have one.

I use this method, http://forum.videohelp.com/topic368581.html and it work's well for me.
Just make sure your PC is pretty fast otherwise you'll be waiting a day or so for your conversion to happen.
The quality is impressive on a BD5 and BD9, I couldn't tell the difference from the original Bluray movie and I'm very fussy.
Give it a try and see for yourself, and you can keep the original 1080p quality to boot !

I've seen a BD9 of a 2 hour 1080p movie and I was pretty impressed with how good it looked as well! I could hardly believe it still looked as good as it did and don't know how you could possibly do it with BD5!

If he's already paid $30 or so for the Blu-ray, maybe he doesn't want to spend another $20 for the DVD.
