I want to upgrade to a Blue Ray DVD player, will it be worth it, as I have a 720P HD Plasma.
How much of an actual difference is there watching blue ray on 720P compared to 1080P

It'll be worth it. I used to laugh about how much I didn't need either and now I have both an HD TV and a Bluray player.

I can't comment on 1080p since I don't have one and haven't seen one any where but a store but it is worth it compared to dvd.

Now upconverted dvds do look good on a 720p tv but the bluray looks a lot better even on a 720p.

It has more detail to work with than the dvd. Even though the tv can't reproduce all of the detail on the bluray since its encoded at 1080p the difference at 720p is noticeable versus a normal dvd.

Trust me its worth it. Plus if you have a hdmi audio receiver with dolby true hd and dts master hd audio you can get up to 7.1 channels of lossless audio (or nearly lossless).

So yes bluray is worth it.

However I am slowly purchasing some movies I already have on dvd. Mostly I'm buying movies I don't already own on dvd on bluray. When prices drop more on bluray movies then I'll "upgrade" more of my dvd collection.

Damn right it'll be worth it.

I have a 42" 720p plasma and a 47" 1080p lcd. On a lot of stuff (including Blu-Rays) the 720p plasma looks better. Many movies on Blu-Ray don't have much of a *wow* factor; either the transfer was mediocre or for artistic reasons the clarity is less than perfect. For example, on the Blu-Ray "Master and Commander", much of the movie is faintly misty-looking, and of course some scenes are swathed in gunpowder smoke or fog. This is evidently deliberate, because scenes ashore are quite crisp. I don't want to imply that many Blu-Rays are disappointing. But they don't all pop like "Speed Racer". :P

When I got an upconverting DVD player, that was a big improvement. Going to Blu-Ray is much more of an improvement, whether at 720p or 1080p.

[EDIT] I don't think the above is clear. Let me put it this way: Some discs don't actually look a helluva lot better at 1080p versus 720p. Depends on size of the HDTV, viewing distance, and quality of the material. Obviously, for a 60" screen, you'd want 1080p. Anyway all the Blu-Ray discs I've bought this year have been *much* better than DVD.

50" and under 720p is fine, except for some anime...above 50, then you want 1080p
