I have an mpg file that's a few minutes too long for a DVD. How can I compress it to fit a DVD? Thanks.

    Rejig can shrink the mpg.

Or if you are making a dvd-video you can just use an all-in-one authoring application that reconverts the video like dvd flick.

Or author it to a dvd-video folder and shrink it using dvd shrink.

Many authoring applications can transcode the video prior to burning as well. Starting with Tmpengc dvd author 2 you can load the video, create the menu, then transcode to a single layer before burning.

Thanks. DVD Flick works great for DVD but doesn't seem to do the same for VCD. Anything similar for VCD? I have VCD Easy but it doesn't compress a file to fit either.

I'll give TMPGenc Author a try.

What are you trying to do with the vcd? VCD is a fixed format. If you are burning to cdr/rw it is fixed. EDIT - there are templates for kvcd and the like that squish more onto a vcd but it reduces quality from I'm told and is no longer a "standard" vcd meaning it will be hit or miss compatibility with settop players.

However you can author vcd on dvd. Dvd will accept mpeg1 video but the audio needs to be 48khz. Many if not most dvd authoring apps will do the audio conversion on its own. At least I know tmpgenc dvd author does. Just insert the vcd file and author as a dvd. No need to shrink unless you have a ton that you want to put on a single layer or dumping a ton on a dual layer.
