So I am about to buy all the parts to build my first HTPC, thanks for the suggestions from people who gave them. Now I just realized that the most import thing is that I do not have to move from my couch and that I do not want a keyboard lying around on my couch.

So what options do I have for a useful remote control?

What do I look for in a remote?

I use a Soundgraph iMon remote. Can't tell you how it compares to others, as it's all I've used and am happy with it. I have the "Knob", there's also one with the sensor in a module you put in an unused external bay on your tower if you'd prefer.

For some applications, for example Digital Theater in TME, all that is necessary is to enter the executable in the remote's app launcher. All multimedia buttons work. For others, for example, MPCHC, it's necessary to enter the keyboard shortcuts (listed in MPCHC options) for each multimedia button. Isn't as tedious as it sounds. :P

    Here's a couple links:

    Good luck.

If you purchase a Hauppauge HDTV Tuner card a MCE remote is included

Hauppauge HDTV tuner cards aren't automatically bundled with a remote. They usually offer a kit that includes a remote, but may also offer the same card without a remote for a bit less. Shoppers need to read the description to find out what is included in the box.

You can download rc codes from the net thru usb to Logitech backlit remotes

A backlit keyboard like my Logitech G-11 can come in real handy

some wireless keyboards have "track balls"

First you choose PVR software, then see their website for remote options.
Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, but the two PVR remotes I've had were utter crap.

First one came with a Leadtek Winfast HDTV Cinema card. Didn't even work, probably a faulty IR sensor. Then the remote bundled with my Hauppauge HD-PVR. That one works, but is far inferior to the iMon. [shrugs]

But yeah, get your PVR and see if the remote (if included) suits your purposes. I should add that I also have a wireless keyboard and mouse. You can do many things with a good HTPC remote, but it can be cumbersome to use for web surfing, etc.

Is the best to go about this really a wireless keyboard and mouse? Or can I really get a lot of function out of a remote control?

this is the case I was going to get, should I not get that one and get a case that has two 5.25" drive bays so I could install a remote that needs a 5.25" drive bay for the remote control?

We are not saying a wireless kb and mouse is better than a remote or vise-versa, you need all three imo

    and a joystick

    and a thruster

    and foot pedals

and a force feedback steering wheel

    lol
