    Hi,

Can you use the Hauppauge HD-PVR HD Video Recorder for normal television or does it have to be HD?

    Thanks

It accepts standard definition as composite or analog component. It has no tuner.

The Component input can be 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i
Now as for High Definition or Standard Definition rec format it make no diff to the HD-PVR it all depend on your video output from your cable or satellite set top box which can be in 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio and display modes/resolutions 480i, 480p, 720p or 1080i.
Composite and S/Video can only do 480i
Do bear in mind that when recoding in 4:3 AR and with 480i Res and movie your rec in widescreen you end upscaling when using a WideScreen TV Monitor. To get around that problem and look rigth it best setup your cable or satellite set top box as 16:9 AR and with 480i or if have the option go for 480p Res.
