.SRT and DVD player question

I just got my first Divx/region free DVD player!!!

It is a Philips DVP3982

It does everything I want so far: play all region DVD's, play data discs, BUT I will not recognize subtitles if I burn them on the data disc.

I have a MAC and what I have been doing is creating a file folder with the .avi and .srt files with the SAME name

EG- Eraserhead.avi Eraserhead.srt

Both of those are in a folder, say named "Eraserhead"

But it will not recognize the subtitles.

I have the capability to hardcore the subs on the movie, but I was hoping I would not have to do that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is it possible the srt file is corrupted?

I suppose it is possible, but it works on the computer fine

I also tried it with a .sub and didnt work either

I load the disc, and it basically brings up a list of films.

Well the one, with the sub extension) shows a folder to the left of it, you open the folder and are only shown the .avi file to choose. You cannot choose the folder as a whole

Use the following 1 minute test videos to see if your player supports subtitles with avi. Burn the yellow folder (not the zipped folder) to a disk, or put the yellow folder on your USB memory stick and plug into DVD player. There should be subtitles when there is talking.

I've never seen a standalone DVD player support sub/idx subtitles.

DivX certified players support subtitles, but in most cases, they have to be muxed into the file. You can also try Eraserhead.avi.srt and see if that helps.

For Windows, there's DivX Mux GUI, that'll let you mux in SRT files and then you end up with a .divx video with the subs inside... let me find out if there's a Mac DivX/AVI mux that can support this.

I have a Philips 5990/37 and it supports SRT subtitles just fine. You can have as many SRT languages you want. I name the files like that for my player:

Eraserhead.avi
Eraserhead.de.srt
Eraserhead.en.srt
Eraserhead.fr.srt
...
