As a bit of a computer geek with a reputation of getting things done was given a assignment today that I would appreciate some advice with.

I was given a video produced in 1990 in a the workplace I have retired from. I was asked to segment it so it could be shown in 20 to 30 minute time segments at our retiree's meeting. The DVD I was given contains a Video TS folder and in it two Video TS Bup files, two Video TS Ifo files, five Video TS VOB files. The whole DVD is about 1 and a half hours long.

I am using a Macintosh G5 $ GB dual and running OSX 10.5.8 and although I am very computer literate I have no expertise with video at all. Is there software that could be recommended segment this video into chunks for Mac OSX? Or even insert a menu into the existing video so after lets say 25 minutes in goes to returns to the main menu with option to choose 4 segments?

Is the such software out there and is it such the a video novice could pick it up?

    All advice appreciated.

I expect someone else to build on this reply but for now.....

You are not asking of how to edit a video but how to edit a dvd. There are tools available to do this but most, as far as I know are for PC and not a Mac. But this is not 'child's play'. The dvd will have to be split into chapters of say 20 minutes each and a menu created so that there is a return to a higher level selection at the end of the chapter. In fact many dvd authoring programs for the PC will not allow for this as chapters are normally just entry points to the video on the disk and the only exit point is at the end of the whole video.

The absolutely easist way to do this is:

    1. Rip the video out of the dvd
    2. Edit the video into smaller parts
    3. Author a brand new dvd with the smaller parts each being a separate selection on a menu so that each one has the exit point at the end of the section

And even that may not be so simple as there are not many dvd authoring programs for a Mac.

There is one quick and dirty method available but you will need access to a stand-alone dvd player and a stand alone dvd-recorder.

    1. Play the dvd in the play which is connected up to the recorder.
    2. The play and recording are stopped at the pre-determined point ie 20 minutes.
    3. Repeat items 1. and 2. for the other required sections
    4. Use the dvd recorder to make a basic menu on the new disk.

Yes; MPEG Streamclip will let you pull segments of whatever length you like and, optionally, convert them to H264 for playback on an iPod or WD TV Media Player.

i'd use yade X to extract the vob files, then use mpeg streamclip to split them up if you have to..you can then use Toast to make a simple menu
