I don't want canopus because they use their DV version which is not real DV.
I checked the lists and they are way outdated.
I will be using it with a tri core phenom2 and 4GB RAM
It must make good quality captures from Hi8 and VHS and SVHS.
    Thanks

What do you mean by this? If you are refering to locked audio then it isn't an issue.

Sending DV to the computer is low bandwidth and requires little processor power. I first started capturing DV on a 500MHz Pentium III.

Just about any analog-to-DV converter will do a good job from these formats especially if the material was recorded on consumer equipment.

It is "real" DV. And it will be higher quality than most of the other cheap DV bridges on the market.
The software you choose will let you select type-1 or type-2.
Older Canopus software used a different way to pack the DV stream, but that has nothing to do with what you would buy. Plus the Canopus format could be repacked to type-1 or type-2 without any loss. But again that has nothing to do with the ADVC line of products.

The type of VCR or Hi8 camcorder/deck you have will have a greater impact on the quality.

    Only a Tri-Core with 4GB?

The only DV bridge I would consider buying is one of the Canopus ADVCs.

I remember editing with Canopus DV a long time ago,it was hard getting the files back to standard DV.
I have a Canon Elura 80 that has an ADC which is one of the reasons I bought it.I have never used it for that yet. Does anyone know anything about this convertor like if it is any good? I can't test it right now because I don't have the power cable for it. I am hoping that it will convert good so I don't have to buy an expensive card.
    Thanks

I've been using a Canopus ADVC50 for over 5 years and have never had any problems using the DV files created from it. Standard DV as far as I'm concerned. And excellent quality.

For the sources you have described I would expect your camcorder to be just fine.

The sources are Hi8 tapes mainly. I am going to run them through an Elite Video bv4 to boost the resolution. I am trying for the best quality and I am unsure if the cameras analog to digital is good enough.
Is there any perceptable quality difference between composite and s-video. And does this camera have a good convertor chip and how good is it?

Can't say unless you test the units side by side. Try your Elura cam first and see how it does.

It won't boost resolution. It may help with levels.

I hate to break it to you, but the Canopus DV boxes ARE the cheap DV bridges on the market. :P
The better ones are in the 4-digit price range.

You've never used one of the Pinnacle products then?

    Cheers,

Canopus ADVC100 for me, the last 6 years (or so).
The best buy I ever did.

ADVC-110 worked great for me. It only lasted about 12 hours when I sold it on Craigslist for $100. I guess I should have asked for more for it.
