I've got a specific mkv that will not work in wmc, it works fine in vlc and I would use that however, movies played in vlc suffer heavy framerate loss on my htpc.
The video codec is x264_L4.1 @ 10765 Kbps
Im using CoreAVC Pro 1.9.5.0 and Shark007's Win7 codecs.
Every other mkv I've tried works fine.
Thanks for any help you guys can provide.
Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

I made some MKV files using makemkv from blu_ray discs (>=25GB) and they wouldn't play using wmp, or divx player on my computer, but would play on my WDTV, all the MKVs made from DVDs (<=3GB) played fine. I suspect that most video software is not equiped to handle such high demanding video.

Yah it seems like the players simply can't handle it, when I try to load it in wmp/wmc it just hangs foreveer and states that the length is ~69 hours long...
Odd tho that vlc can play it fine, I think I'll try transcoding it to something else. Or I'll just get a PS3 and use PS3 Media Server, that seems to handle everything you throw at it. -
I notice with some .mkv files, as soon as I try to move the seek slider, VLC crashes. I've been using Splash Lite
So far the slider seems solid. Never went away or hung even on the same files that crashed VLC.

Does your video card offer DXVA hardware acceleration? That made the biggest difference with my MKV/BD playback. You can check DXVA operation using the DXVA Checker program: http://bluesky23.hp.infoseek.co.jp/en/index.html
MKV can use a lot of CPU power. You might check your CPU usage during playback. If it's high, then maybe you need to upgrade your video card to one that can use DXVA. Even my HTTP with onboard video can playback most any MKV or Blu-ray video I've tried. You might also check your software video player. A lot of them now can use DXVA if you check the box to enable it.
For Windows Media Center/WMP, no guarantees. I don't use either for much of anything. MPC-HC is one good program for HD file playback. -
