VHS, DVD, BLU-RAY... What's next?
Edit: Just read some stuff on Wikipedia about Holographic Versatile Disc, LS-R, and Protein-coated disc. Is there a possibility that these formats could end up being commercial media, perhaps for video, in the near future? If so how near?

Not very near. You cannot assess trends by focusing on technology alone, ignoring economics and market demand. Consider that Blu-ray's still having trouble taking a significant hold in the mass market.
